How to Wear Black on Black

Looking through my closet, you’ll see a lot of bright colors, pastels, and jewel-toned hues. But one of my favorite timeless trends to wear is an all-black outfit. Growing up in Florida, I never wore all black until I went away for college and started going out to bars and clubs. The nearly 100 degree temps ten months out of the year in South Florida deterred me from wearing much black growing up. But then I moved to New York City for grad school, and it seems my whole wardrobe turned black! Black on black was the norm, and I felt most comfortable in it.

Now since I moved back to Florida, I do wear more color, but when I’m at a loss of what to wear, I’ll throw on black slacks or jeans with a black top, and it feels perfect!

So how can you get away with all-black during the warmer months or if you aren’t completely comfortable wearing the dark shade head to toe? There’s a couple of ways to mix it up. My first suggestion is to add in a pop of color somewhere else, such as pink or red shoes, a bright purse, or a fun statement necklace or earrings. Or add them all in! I mixed up my all black outfit with a mustard colored bag and leopard print heels to add some contrast. My second suggestion is to mix textures in your outfit. For example, wear a pair of black jeans with a satin top, or a top with ruffles or pattern.
